HELLO - I'm Steve Slimm,
You may have arrived here looking for examples of my original paintings or prints, or maybe come from my blog; or you may have come in search of my music. Maybe from my YouTube videos? Or don't tell me you've come across my poetry - or even something to do with life coaching?! Anyway . . . . whatever – You're Welcome!
If you dont' know much about me it's fair to say Steve Slimm is a bit of a rarity! It's not that I can't make my mind up what I want to be/do - it's just that I want to do so much! I made this site to bring everything together under one roof, to give some idea of the scope of my work. I think from an early age I showed signs of developing along a variety of distinct pathways, and it is only recently that I've been able to bring them all together both in myself and in my public relations; and to be happy wearing a truly muti-coloured hat!
From this point on you might get stuff written in the third person, (like as though it's someone else writing about me), but to be honest - it's still me. It just reads better if it seems as though it's someone else who's blowing your trumpet! When I do this I'll put "thingies" round it - ok? Here goes:
"Steve Slimm has been known for his distinct style of art through original paintings seen in galleries in St. Ives in Cornwall since the early 1980’s. At the time it was said by other artists regarding him: “Who is this guy Steve Slimm? He seems to have suddenly appeared out of nowhere!” Apparently Slimm had thought it was the done thing for an artist to make a living out of original paintings, and decided he wanted to do that too! No one told him most artists didn’t, and it was supposed to be hard to keep selling your artwork; and those artists he viewed as successful were actually really struggling - despite their artistic excellence and merit!
So Steve began his art career as a painter with a profusion of smaller original artworks, which he hoisted onto an unsuspecting summer tourist market through a handful or more of St. Ives art galleries. And strangely he was an immediate success! The renown new age artist Keith English was the first to see and respect his talent, and straight away gave him a high profile in his popular Cornish seafront gallery, selling his modestly priced original paintings regularly. From that position Steve quickly secured other prestigious St. Ives galleries (and other galleries throughout Cornwall), exhibiting more and more of his unusually atmospheric and mystical watercolours and oil paintings to the delight of both gallery and public.
With his special approach to painting Steve in some way became an influence toward other Cornish artists’ work. This kind of art was unable to be placed into any specific box. On the one hand there were many artists at the time following in the St. Ives school tradition, or painting abstract work such as the paintings that dominated both the Penwith and Newlyn Societies of Artists. And there were also many so-called commercial painters, who had an eye for ‘the market’, and what ‘the punters’ who wandered along the seafront into their galleries wanted. But Steve fell somewhere fairly and squarely in between these two cultures; so although exhibiting originals mainly through commercial tourist galleries during those early years, he was also able to make a smooth shift into the fine art field at the end of the 90’s due to the fact that the work he was producing had always been fine art."
Fair enough! Anyway - a bit more about me: I was never taught painting (nor any discipline full stop!) at art college or university. Despite doing very well at Cheltenham Grammar School, from leaving at the age of sixteen my path has been entirely self-taught. Although having my own misgivings about it, it has proved advantageous in a variety of ways. Both fellow artists and gallerists through the years have given their approval to my lack of formal educational influence, citing this as a major factor in my unique approach etc. So who am I to gainsay anything? Its not that I lack education anyway - I just do my own!
Today I believe I hold a well respected position among Cornish artists and others in the art world, and many collectors seek out my original paintings. At this dedicated website I'm pleased to introduce you not only to Steve Slimm – the Artist, but also to me as Musician, and Poet, and as a one-to-one Life Coach, and also to my Writings – often verging on the esoteric and spiritual.
